UNRAVEL

FOR THE LONGEST TIME WHEN I LOOKED IN A MIRROR I DIDN’T SEE A MAN. WHAT I SAW IN MY REFLECTION WAS TOO SOFT TO BE A MAN. THE PERSON I SAW LOOKING BACK AT ME HAD SHED WAY TOO MANY TEARS TO BE DEEMED A MAN. HE KISSED ONE TOO MANY BOYS. HE HAD NONE OF WHAT HIS FATHER HAD. I KINDA WISH I HAD SOMEONE TELLING ME THAT MASCULINITY HAS NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH TEARS, OR SEX, OR INTEREST. IT TOOK ME WAY TOO LONG TO UNDERSTAND, MASCULINITY IS POWER. THE POWER TO STAND FIRMLY IN WHO I AM EVERY SINGLE DAY IN A WORLD THAT TAUGHT ME I WAS FLAWED IS MY MASCULINITY. KNOWING THAT MY VOICE, MY BODY, MY MIND, AND MY SOUL ARE WORTHY IS MY MASCULINITY.  IT’S ABOUT LOOKING IN A MIRROR AND SAYING FUCK APPROVAL. IT’S ABOUT PROTECTING YOUR OWN JOY, PROTECTING YOUR OWN PEACE OF MIND, HAVING THE INTEGRITY TO LOVE ALL OF YOU. FUCK WHAT SOCIETY EXPECTS OF YOU. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT OF YOU? WHAT DO YOU FEEL? AND DO YOU POSSES THE STRENGTH TO ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE FEELINGS? DO YOU POSSES THE STRENGTH TO FIND YOURSELF IN A WORLD THAT WILL SURELY PAINT IT’S OWN IMAGE OF YOU ANYWAY? THAT’S WHAT A MAN IS. THAT’S WHAT POWER IS AND I HOPE THAT EVERY LITTLE BLACK/GAY KID LIKE MYSELF UNDERSTANDS THAT POWER IS WITHIN HIM. NIGGAS ARE POWERFUL. ALL OF THEM. AND NOW MORE THAN EVER I FEEL LIKE MEN OF COLOR ARE STARTING TO UNDERSTAND AND CHAMPION THAT POWER WITHIN OURSELVES AND OUR BROTHERS.

UNRAVEL IS MY ARTISTIC EXPRESSION OF OUR POWER.
